The hike down to the falls of the Wind River was a nice way to spend the afternoon yesterday. The falls were amazing and it was interesting to see the significant erosion the falls have been responsible for while they rip down the mountain.

It was a clear night last night and the morning air was crisp as I bombed down most of the remaining downhill from Togwotee Pass before making a right turn to start the long climb up to Union Pass. The range of temperatures in the summer in the high mountains is remarkable.

The long climb up to Union Pass was worth the 360 degree views offered once up on the pass. This pass was unique in that once on top, it flattens out essentially and the magnificent views continue for a few miles.

The plan today was to make it to a campsite that would put me close to Pinedale. Once looking at the profile view for tomorrow’s ride again last night, I knew it would then be a relatively short day into Pinedale the following day.
As a couple northbound riders passed and we shared information, I found out that shortly after my planned campsite the poor gravel conditions turn into pavement for most of the remaining ride. That was all the information I needed to make a decision.

I soon made the decision to just push on to Pinedale, a city of 2,000 people with a nice supermarket, restaurants, etc. The clouds over the mountains were threatening and the temperatures were not hot enough to make the remaining miles miserable making the decision even easier. I have also come to realize that having a day in the bank as a way to counteract any bad luck in the future is always nice, especially on the GDMBR where it is so hard to make up time.

I made it to Pinedale after a long day in the saddle and found a great motel, ate dinner at a great Chinese restaurant and went to the supermarket afterwards. I have enough supplies for the next three days until I get to another city. Let’s do this!

Pro Tip of the Day: When you strap your cold weather gear to the back of your bike after it warms up enough to no longer need to wear the gear, make sure the strap is properly closed and check it periodically. My left leg may get cold tomorrow, rain pants will be worn!
