Day 11. Blythe Island Regional Park Campground to Richmond Hill.

We had to slow play setting up camp last night because we were told a nice thunderstorm was coming our way later in the afternoon. Hanging out on the big ol’ porch was perfect because when the storm came it was just as predicted. We finished up dinner and finally decided to make a recon of our primitive campsite. Luckily for us our site was on the high ground and we were soon set up and retired for the night.

This morning we rode quietly through the night and I enjoyed crossing a few waterways and seeing some of the beautiful boats resting on the water. Georgia’s coastline is drastically different from Florida’s. Not too many beaches in Georgia it seems and this has provided some nice variation in scenery.

This part of Georgia has deep historical roots as most of these coastal towns are obviously some of the oldest in our young country. If I had a magic wand, I would love to work my magic and see all these beautiful houses transported back into their prime.

The people down here seem to have strong family connections. I saw a beautiful historical home today with a couple tombstones in the yard next to the house. Burying your family members in your yard pretty much means you intend your house to stay in your family for the long haul. Never seen any couple on HGTVs House Hunters view a house where the real estate agent gives a quick heads up that the yard may not be a place where the kids will want to play. No swing set or trampoline can be placed over in that general direction my friends, gotta respect the dead!

Whatcha You Know About The Piggly Wiggly?

We eventually found ourselves on a beautiful stretch of road that had tall Georgia pines lining both sides of the street. The humidity really seems to give the pine smell a piggy back ride right into my nostrils. Mulch is another smell that is definitely amplified by all this moisture.

The beautiful pine trees and the setting I was riding through caused me to want to listen to a couple of songs via my iPhone speakers, one being Willie Nelson’s “Georgia on My Mind.” The harmonica was really making everything alright this morning in my little world. Little moments like this make it all worth while.

Mid morning Snack.

Today was one of the longest mileage days we will ride on this trip and we knocked it out before the heat of the day became too oppressive. The only camping option in this area is a KOA Resort and at the prices they charge for tent camping, we would have been fools not to split a cheap hotel room for the same amount of money. The nice man at the hotel front desk also hooked us up with a local restaurant recommendation for later today. Victory.

  1. Glad you and Willie had a nice ride today. With the thunder storms a motel seems like a good idea. We shopped at the Piggly Wiggly when we lived in SC. You must be starting to feel like you are home. Randy
