After some delicious Chimichangas and a couple Negra Modelos for dinner last night, I was soon fast asleep and enjoyed the longest amount of sleep all trip. The morning did come fast it seemed and we hit the trail enjoying the Spanish Moss Trail until the terminus.

Once the trail ended and we found ourselves on a deserted highway where instead of cars and trucks speeding by we were actually able to hear the crickets and cicadas taking care of early morning business. Once off the main highway, the pitch dark night offered some spectacular star views.

Seems nobody around here gets up early on Sunday mornings. The cashier at our first stop told us we would see some traffic when the church goers head to church. She was correct and she was also correct in saying that today was extra humid. I felt like I had jumped into a pool in my cycling gear and then hopped straight on my bike.

Eventually we found country roads and passed by a plantation where the front gate had been long time forgotten. Seems the house is being maintained and it offered a glimpse into the past.

These country roads offer great scenery as long as one does not look on the sides of the road. South Carolina is rivaling eastern Kentucky in filth for sure. I have to be honest and not try to sugar coat the last part of the day’s ride. It was sickening and made worse since I am riding with a visiting friend. Not to beat a dead horse, but how could anyone allow trash bags full of trash to be left on a road and dozens of cans and other trash to be left in the ditch in front of one’s house is beyond me.

The last part of the day we did find a short sand and dirt road that offered a great distraction and lightened the mood. It was good to find some dirt to play in and a good way to end the day.
