Day 44. Duck Puddle Campground to Belfast.

With the potential for more early morning rain showers, Folker and I left most expeditiously this morning. About five minutes after our departure, the rain started and we once again were able to pack up camp prior to experiencing any muddy conditions. Lucky us.

The rain was heavy for a while this morning and then lightened up for most of the ride. I once again found myself on country roads with limited Sunday morning traffic. Maine has a beautiful countryside and unique fishing communities on the coast. We know first hand the amazing seafood these communities are bringing to the table.

Riding in the rain can sometimes place you directly into the present. Focus can be no further away than just right in front of the front wheel. I often wonder what people say to themselves when they pass me riding in the pouring rain while they are driving their car. Are they thinking I am foolish? I know when I see a cyclist in the rain pedaling on down the wet road, I say “Right On!”

When the rain lightened up I was thinking of just how fast the time goes by. I still cannot believe that tomorrow is the last ride of this adventure. Seems like I was just picking Folker up at the airport and now here we are one day away from finishing this ride.

I enjoyed the climbing today and the views of the mountains once I found myself on the high ground. One more day to soak in all the beauty of Maine and to enjoy every last minute of this adventure.

The day ended in a heavy downpour and with us stopping at McDonalds for some WiFi and refuge. Folker soon found us a Warmshowers host, which will be our first successful attempt. Better late than never, I suppose. We plan to pitch our tents in their yard and roll out early on our last day. Here we go!
