Day 45. Belfast to Bar Harbor.

Folker came through yesterday in finding a great Warmshowers host. He found a young man named Thumbs who is part of a four family co-op in a nice large house back in the woods. Thumbs’ father is Dutch and it was great for Folker to have an instant connection with our host.

We were given many camping options in the large backyard and even told we could splash off in the river behind our tents. We also were told to make sure to grab any vegetables we wanted out of the community garden. Such a kind and generous group of people. Nice last night of camping, if you ask me.

Perfect Camping Spot.

I slept in this morning and Folker woke up and left in the darkness to get a head start. I paid a little price for waiting until just before sunrise as the mosquitoes were out in full force. I packed up as quickly as possible to avoid the full frontal attack.

Before I turned onto Highway 1, which would be the busy road I would ride on most of the day, I see a large pickup truck come across the center line and then continue towards me. I thought that he was trying to force me off the road at this point. I got off the road to keep from potentially becoming road kill. He quickly swerved back over to his side of the road. Wow. He was obviously distracted inside the truck as he turned into his warehouse workplace soon after. Just a reminder to never let your guard down even when close to your destination.

I soon made it out of Belfast and would continue on Highway 1. I was able to see some interesting human creations, but it seemed my pleasant riding conditions were for sure behind me now.

Just like two years ago, I have seen some interesting street names on this journey. On the last day of the ride two years ago, I captured and shared one of the many unique street names seen throughout the trip and on the last day of the ride this year, here is another good one. Scuttlebutt Lane.

Alrighty Then.

It was a pleasure to ride across the Penobscot Narrows Bridge this morning and see the tallest public bridge observatory in the world. I could only imagine the views from up top of this unique structure.

It was not long before I started seeing signs to Bar Harbor. Erin and the family woke up super early up in Canada to be able to make it to the end point to greet us today. I finally caught Folker and we made a stop a few miles out to allow them to catch up. I love seeing my beautiful family at the end of an adventure.

The time had came for Folker and I to make our way to the end of this route. A couple hills and down we came into Bar Harbor to an absolutely stunning view of the harbor with my family waiting. Perfect ending to a great adventure.
