Day 1. OCVA. Portland to Estacada.

Erin asked me last night as we were laying in bed if I was excited or nervous. I really did not have an answer. The only answer I could give is something that makes sense to those who have served. I feel like this short trip is more like a TDY (Temporary Duty) versus my other longer trips being more like a deployment. Either way, I am sure this trip will pack a punch and I should get some bang for my buck.

I have to admit, it was really nice to finally start a multi-day ride from my home. I had said goodbye to my two little troopers last night and was fortunate to have Erin up this morning to wish me safe travels as I peddled on down our street and slowly out of sight. In reality, the Boss probably went straight back in the house as soon as the first peddle stroke was made.

Starting from Mi Casa.

Well, I had not even made it out of Portland and I already had met the most interesting human I would meet for the entirety of the first day. Like a voice from the heavens, ok more like a voice from a slightly elevated position, Desmond called out to me as I was passing by on the street below. He asked if I was riding cross country and unfortunately the answer was simply not this time.

Desmond aka Des.

Desmond has actually supported Cycle Oregon in the past by providing pizza from his very own pizza place as part of the food caravan that follows along during their amazing events.

So why are you on the roof my man? Well, he bought this house and as a carpenter by trade he has started the remodel himself. This will be his home and not a quick flip. As you can see, the remodel is fully underway. Desmond is obviously a very kind human and it was amazing to come across someone before I even got to the terminus of the route. Like I told him, it is often the people like himself that makes these trips so special.

Portland Morning Views.

Five miles into the actual route, I found myself on a single track going up a steep, rocky trail to the top of Powell Butte Natural Park. I started this party off with a hike-a-bike and could not have been any more pleased with myself early this morning.

Single Track Love.

After the Butte, I found myself on the Springwater Corridor. Every so often, a gravel trail would be offered as a temporary boost of happiness as it was a game of on the corridor and off the corridor for a while.

Why did the ducks cross the road?
Wild Teasel.

Soon, I was riding up and down some beautiful rolling hills and on my way to Sandy. Once in the small town which we drive through numerous times in the winter as he head up to Mt Hood for skiing, I saw the shop that we have always driven past because we would already have the necessary goods with us. What goods? Donuts my friend!

Sandy.
Yes, Please.

After devouring a Maple Log, and I mean log in every sense of the word, I found myself answering questions from one of a group of three hikers on their way to the Mirror Lake Trail. It is always nice to share with those that are interested in outdoor activities and perhaps something I would say could inspire them to set sail on their own adventure one day.

After Sandy, I found the rolling hills turned into step climbing and descending. With the temperature on the rise, it was nice to see the Estacada city limits sign. The Home of The Rangers signs were abundant and apparently they still have school spirit Erin. Just like they did back in your day.

Estacada.
